The Andhra Pradesh government has released new guidelines to provide free bus travel for women under the “Stri Shakti” scheme, starting from August 15. This initiative aims to empower women by offering free rides on APSRTC buses across the state.
Women, girls, and transgender persons will be able to avail free travel by presenting valid identification cards on designated APSRTC bus services. The scheme includes five categories of buses such as Palle Velugu, Ultra Palle Velugu, and City Ordinary buses. Additionally, free travel will be available on Metro Express and Express buses.
However, certain services are exempt from this scheme. Free travel will not be applicable on Tirumala-Tirupati Saptagiri buses, non-stop services, and interstate bus services. Similarly, Saptagiri Express Ultra Deluxe, Super Luxury, Star Liner, and AC buses are excluded from the free travel benefit.
Due to the expected increase in passenger volume, the government has directed APSRTC to take necessary measures to manage the crowd effectively. To ensure passenger safety and security, the installation of CCTV cameras in all buses has been mandated. Conductors will also be equipped with body-worn cameras.
Furthermore, the government has ordered improvements in basic facilities at bus stands to enhance commuter convenience. The APSRTC Managing Director has been tasked with overseeing the implementation of the scheme and ensuring the issuance of zero-fare tickets along with clear communication regarding any applicable concessions.
This initiative reflects Andhra Pradesh’s commitment to promoting women’s mobility and independence while improving public transportation safety and service quality.
